Control is achieved by means of central control heads or \u2013 in the case of large systems \u2013 by PLC and individual valve control.<br\/>Small systems operate in alternating mode, meaning that one softener column is in operation while a second is in stand-by mode. Larger systems use parallel operation: both columns are in operation and are permanently flowed through, which is advantageous for critical microbiological applications.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The water softeners operate volume- or quality-controlled by means of online hardness measurement.
